Sam Leach was born in Adelaide in 1973. He has studied extensively, including at the University of Adelaide, and RMIT University in Melbourne where in 2016 he was awarded a degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Fine Arts). Since his first solo exhibition in 2015 he has held a further 23 solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hong Kong, London and Basel and participated in numerous group exhibitions. He has won many prizes in art competitions, amongst his best known being his controversial win for the Art Gallery of New South Wales Wynne Prize for Australian Landscape’ in 2010 for a painting that had a striking resemblance to a 17th century Dutch painting by Adam Pynacker. He won the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize in 2010 after being a finalist in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
