Born in Brisbane in 1935, Hughes is a mainly self-taught artist, who turned to full time painting c1966 after working for six years as art director for an advertising company in Sydney and Brisbane. He has held solo exhibitions in Sydney since 1972. He went on a study tour to Europe in 1979 and to the USA in 1980.
