Born in Boston, USA in 1840, Charles Foster arrived in Australia c1856 and travelled throughout Australia during the 1860s to the 1890s. From 1873 to 1887 he exhibited marine paintings at the Victorian Academy of Arts. He travelled to New Zealand in 1895 where he painted coastal landscapes and shipping scenes and exhibited at the Auckland Society of Arts, the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in 1905, and the Otago Art Society.
