Born in Gisborne, New Zealand in 1913, Norman Scott was a part time self taught artist. But after service in World War II in the air force, he studied at Slade School, London and graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts. He then returned to New Zealand in 1949, living in Gisborne, and becamea a full time artist. A painter in oil and watercolour and a sculptor,he was instrumental in the foundation of the Gisborne Artists Society, where he exhibited. He also exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts, Hays Art Competitions in the 1960s, Canterbury Society of Arts, the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1951 and The Group in 1965.
