Lawyer, advocate, administrator and painter George Milner Stephen was born in Wells, Somerset in 1812 and migrated with his family to Australia aged 12 in 1824. From 1840 he held various administrative positions. He was a member of Victoria's Legislative Assembly for two years and became parliamentary draughtsman. He was represented in the 1979 exhibition Australian Colonial Portraits at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1998.
