Born in New Zealand in 1939, Michael Smither trained at Auckland's School of Fine Arts. He has exhibited widely in both New Zealand and Australia, winning prizes for his work in both countries. His style has been described as neorealistic, and much of his subject matter is around the rocks and rocky coastline of Taranaki, as well as domestic life in the Smither household.
