About Michael Smither
Born in New Zealand in 1939, Michael Smither trained at Auckland's School of Fine Arts. He has exhibited widely in both New Zealand and Australia, winning prizes for his work in both countries. His style has been described as neorealistic, and much of his subject matter is around the rocks and rocky coastline of Taranaki, as well as domestic life in the Smither household.
Michael Smither is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1988 of 2,277, of which 1,790 (79%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $468,114 for Two Rock Pools sold by International Art Centre in November 2022. This year 138 works have been offered for sale.
