Born in 1911, Brett Hilder is the youngest son of Jesse Jewhurst Hilder. Traveller, sea captain, pilot, navigator, genealogist and writer, Brett Hilder took up painting during World War II, creating many watercolour landscapes and portraits of the people and places he visited, mainly in watercolour. He exhibited with the Australian Watercolour Institute, the Royal Art Society of NSW and in New Guinea and New York.

The total number of works by Brett Hilder offered for sale by auction since 1977 is 28, of which 14 (50%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,300 for MV 'Tulagi' at Sydney Island sold by Lawsons in March 1998. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2019.
