The brother of well known portrait painter, Oscar Fristrom, Edward Fristrom was born in Sweden in 1864, and studied at the Royal Art School, Stockholm. He became a seaman, arriving in Brisbane in the 1890s where he settled and married. He was a Council member of the Queensland art Society. Like his brother he frequently painted portraits of the indigenous people. By 1903 he had travelled to New Zealand where he gained a reputation as a portrait and landscape painter, exhibiting with the Auckland Society of Arts. While in New Zealand he taught at Eltham School. Bu 1909 he was back in Brisbane, and for the next 7 years travelled between Australia and New Zealand, until 1916 he went to California, where he lived until his death in 1950.
