Born in Eaglemont, Victoria in 1913, Hayward Veal began classes at the age of 17 in Melbourne under with Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Colquhuons and later Max Meldrum. A painter of landscapes and portraits, he held his first exhibition in Melbourne in 1937 and then moved to Sydney where he established his own art school and worked as an art critic on ABC radio and for a daily newspaper. He was made a Fellow of Royal Art Society of New South Wales in 1940 and in 1951 travelled to the UK, where he lived for the next 17 years. Hayward Veall held his first London exhibition in 1952 and this was followed by further London exhibitions. He also exhibited several times in New York, and in Rome. He died in 1968, the year he returned to Sydney with an exhibition.
