James Fenton arrived in Hobart in 1834. He was a pioneer writer and artist who made his living from timber. He settled in the Forth River estuary region in 1840 and his sister, married to George Hall lived at Port Sorrell. He wrote A History of Tasmania, Hobart 1884, and Bush Life in Tasmania Fifty Years Ago Hobart 1891.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1981.
