Born in 1927 near the Glyde River in Central Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, David Malangi Daymirringu’s commercial artistic practice developed in the 1960s after many years of ritualistic painting. In 1978 he was one of the first Indigenous artists to be selected to present their work at the Biennale of Sydney and in 1983 at the exhibition Australian Perspecta at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (1983). Malangi’s solo exhibition No Ordinary Place: The Art of David Malangi at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra in 2004 toured Australia. His works have also been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions. He died in 1999 at Yathalamarra in Central Arnhem Land, Northern Territory.

The total number of works by David Malangi Daymirringu offered for sale by auction since 1987 is 186, of which 133 (72%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $56,900 for Gurrmirringu's Wife c. 1968 sold by Sotheby's in July 2005. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by David Malangi Daymirringu are held by the Art Gallery of Western Australia, National Gallery of Australia and a further four major public national galleries (see list below).
