A contemporary of impressionist artists Streeton, Roberts and Conder, Jessie Scarvell trained under William Lister in Sydney. During a six-year period from 1892 to 1898 she exhibited more than 67 paintings, mainly at the Art Society of NSW. A career highlight was the inclusion of five of her works in the 1898 Exhibition of Australian Art in London, in 1898, organised by the Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. However she seems to have discontinued her artistic career after 1898. She married in 1901 and moved to a property in rural Queensland where she had a daughter, which may have been a factor in her career change. In 2004 15 of her paintings were donated to the National Trust of Australia (NSW) by her daughter and these works are now on display in Sydney's S. H. Ervin Gallery.
