Edith Bell Brown was born in 1864 at Surrey Hills, Sydney. A professional painter, art teacher china painter, ceramicist, photographer and printmaker, she received her initial art training at Sydney Teachers College in 1893 and later taught art at the college from 1897 to 1909. She also studied at Sydney Technical College from 1894 to 1899 and taught at East Sydney Technical College from 1899-1926. She first exhibited her art works about 1910 and in 1914, she exhibited several etchings at the Society of Woman Painters. Around this time she became known for her pottery, and the Art Gallery of NSW acquired four of her porcelain wares. In Sydney, she exhibited at the Royal Art Society, the Society of Women Painters and the Society of Arts & Craft of N.S.W. In Brisbane, she exhibited with the Royal Queensland Art Society and in Adelaide, with the Royal South Australian Society of Art.
