Richard Beck was born in Hampshire, England, in 1912. He was and educated at the Glasgow Academy, Sevenoaks School in Kent, the Slade School of Art in London and the Blocherer School in Munich. He had his own design consultancy service in London where was known as an artist and designer for a number of English newspapers, and for his poster designs for international corporations. He arrived in Australia in 1940 after leaving England for New Zealand in 1939. He served with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) during World War II and after the war established his own design and consultancy business in Melbourne. In the 1950s and 60s he won numerous design awards and was Head of Graphic Design at the Prahran Technical College from 1969 to 1972. He was also a visiting lecturer at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
The total number of works by Richard Beck offered for sale by auction since 1998 is 26, of which 16 (62%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,640 for Thirty-Two Photographs of Australian Artists Including Fred Cress, Rosemary Madigin, Clifton Pugh, Tim Storrier and Bret sold by Leonard Joel in June 2011. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2021. Works by Richard Beck are held by the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Ian Potter Museum of Art and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
