Born in Germany in 1915, Rose arrived in Australia in 1957. During World War II he escaped from a German concentration camp, fled to Britain and later served in the British army. His paintings reflect the influence of the German Expressionists and often have dark morbid themes. He was a finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize in 1962 and 1963 and exhibted in the Wynne, Sulman, Blake, and Robin Hood prizes. He established his own art school in Sydney in 1966. Commercially he exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions, including Macquarie Galleries, and in Melbourne, London, Paris, and New York. He won numerous prizes at Art shows thoughout New South Wales in the 1960s. In 1971 he moved to London, and was awarded the British Empire Medal (B.E.M.), returning to Hobart in 1990.
