Born in Melbourne in 1920, McDonald is a painter and printmaker. During World War II he served with the Royal Signals Corps, working as a draughtsman. He lectured in graphic illustration at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1962 to 1982. McDonald is best known as a painter of street scenes and old buildings and has won several prizes.
