About Ambrose Hallen
Born in New South Wales in 1886, Ambrose Hallen went to France at the age of 19 and studied in France. He joined John Peter Russell's small colony of artists at his home in Belle Isle. Hallen returned to Australia in the late 1930s and settled in Victoria where he exhibited his Matisse-like watercolours and drawings. He died in 1943. His friend, artist Lina Bryans bought the hotel Hallen had rented at Darebin, and it was used as a home for the painters Ada Plante, William Frater and Ian Fairweather, and a meeting place for many others.
