Jack Montgomery was raised and lived in the Melbourne's Dandenong Ranges area for most of his life, but also explored Australia by push bike, camel and car and visited many remote areas of the world seeking inspiration for his art. He trained as an art teacher and graduated in 1947, at which point he commenced his painting career. He then commenced exhibiting his paintings interstate and overseas, including exhibitions in London, Calgary, St Louis, Santa Fe and Los Angeles. He was instrumental in fostering his love of art with the stdents he taugt over his long career, and assisting them to reach their full potential. Between exhibitions, teaching and expeditions, he won various awards for his work including the Commonwealth Jubliee Hoonours List Bronze medal for services to Central Australia, was made an honorary member of the Society of Western Artists (USA) and in 1974 received an Australian Arts Council Award
