Born in Auckland in 1973, Reuben Paterson graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Elam School of Fine Arts, from The University of Auckland in 1997 and a Post Graduate Diploma of Teaching, The University of Auckland in 2000. Following graduation in 1997 Paterson was one of three artists awarded a six-week residency in France as part of the Moet & Chandon Art Fellowship. His residencies include the Goyang Art Studio Residency, run by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Korea, and New Zealand’s Art Foundation 2014. He has had numerous private and public exhibitions including the 8th Festival of Pacific Arts Biennale d’Art Contemporian, in Noumea, New Caledonia, the International Biennale of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery in Prague and the 17th Biennale of Australia. He has exhibited in over 60 solo and groups shows in commercial galleries in New Zealand and Australia between 2001 and 2019.
