Little is known of the personal life of Melbourne artist Colvin Smith. Working in the 1940s and 1950s he produced landscpes in with a variety of media including oil, watercolour, gouache, pencil and crayon, he rendered landscapes. He exhibited at the Riddle Gallery in Melbourne in 1940, the Atheneum Gallery 1944, 1951 and 1956 and at the Victorian Artist's Society of which he was a member. Colvin Smith was appointed instructor in charge of art at Echuca Technical College in 1953.
We have records of art auction sales by Colvin Smith from 1976 and in total 45 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 28 (62%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,980 for The Bowler sold by Leonard Joel in August 1995. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Colvin Smith are held by the National Gallery of Victoria.
