Born in New Zealand in 1862, Arthur Merric Boyd (Senior) arrived in Australia in 1886. In 1890, with his wife Minnie (nee A'Becket), also an artist, they moved to England and both exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1891. They travelled and painted in Europe and returned to Melbourne in 1893. Principally a watercolourist, he had several exhibitions in both Australia and England. He is the father of Theodore Penleigh Boyd, William Merric Boyd and Martin Boyd.
