Born in Auckland, New Zealand in about 1873, Edwin Bartley was a cartoonist for newspapers for some time, but lived mainly by his painting during the latter part of his life. He exhibited figure compositions, genre portraits and landscapes with the Auckland Society of Arts (1892-93) and Canterbury Society of Arts (1898-c1930).
