Born in London in 1881, Van Raalte arrived in Australia in 1910. He studied at St John's Wood School and at the Royal Academy School, London. One of Australia's best etchers, he was an original member of the Australian Painters' and Etchers' Society, and curator of the South Australian Art Gallery. Van Raalte's etchings are represented in most major Australian collections.

Henri Van Raalte is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1975 of 450, of which 358 (80%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $33,000 for A Collection of Various Subjects (28) sold by Christies in May 1989. This year one work has been offered for sale.
