Born in London in 1881, Van Raalte arrived in Australia in 1910. He studied at St John's Wood School and at the Royal Academy School, London. One of Australia's best etchers, he was an original member of the Australian Painters' and Etchers' Society, and curator of the South Australian Art Gallery. Van Raalte's etchings are represented in most major Australian collections.
