Born in North Wales in 1913, George Brooke arrived in Melbourne in 1926 and studied at the National Art Gallery. He worked as scenic artist in Melbourne Theatres and prior to World War II became a commercial artist and illustrator. He joined the army and served in the Middle East, Papua/New Guinea and Dutch East Indies, returning to commercial art in Sydney after the war. In 1964 he became a full time painter, travelling through far north Queensland before returning to Melbourne in 1973.

The total number of works by George Brooke offered for sale by auction since 1984 is 26, of which 18 (69%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,200 for An Australian Landscape sold by Leonard Joel in July 1988. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022.
