Theo Janssen, is a Dutch born sculptor who emigrated to New Zealand in 1958. He was born in the Netherlands in 1934. He studied drawing and sculpture before arriving in New Zealand. Like his older brother Peter (1930–.), he worked with bronze, marble, polyester, and wood. He is best known for his sculptural, mosaic, and stained glass work. Janssen's work is often abstract and geometric, with a strong emphasis on form and color. He was also interested in the relationship between art and architecture, and many of his works were designed to be integrated into buildings. Some of Janssen's most notable works include the stained glass windows at St. Mary's Church in Wellington, the mosaic mural at the National Bank of New Zealand in Auckland, and the bronze sculpture "Rampart" at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Janssen's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout New Zealand and internationally. He has also received numerous awards for his work, including the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009.
