Born in Armidale, New South Wales in 1914, Harry McDonald attended the Julian Ashton School, studied in Sydney with Dattilo Rubbo and at East Sydney Technical College. A painter and teacher, McDonald painted portraits, landscapes and genre, using oils and watercolours. During World War II he exhibited at the Contemporary Art Society and at that time joined the Communist party. In 1945 he joined the S.O.R.A. (Society of Realist Art) and conducted classes at the Waterside Federation. Two of his works were exhibited in Art and Social Commitment exhibition which toured Australia in 1984-85.
