Born in 1911 in Elsternwick, Melbourne, Valerie Albiston spent the majority of her life as a dedicated painter, alongside her younger sister, Yvonne Cohen. After extensive travel throughout Europe, studying the works of emerging painters of the day, the sisters returned to Australia in 1935. They studied at the Melbourne Technical College (RMIT), and the National Gallery School, in Melbourne. From 1940 to 1980 Cohen and her sister divided their time between a North Queensland island near Dunk Island, and Melbourne. A modernist painter, she exhibited in group exhibitions from 1985.
