Born in London in 1850, MacLeod arrived in Australia in 1855. Best known as editor of "The Bulletin" magazine, he also contributed work to Sydney "Punch" and the "Picturesque Atlas of Australasia". He painted numerous portraits of artists and is also remembered for his historical paintings.

The earliest auction listing we have for William MacLeod is in 1973 and in total 10 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 8 (80%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,200 for Portrait of Maryanne Kelly and Child, c. 1860 sold by Sotheby's in November 1992. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by William MacLeod are held by the National Portrait Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
