Born in Germany in 1808, Becker arrived in Tasmania in 1851 where he painted miniatures. Between 1852 and 1854 he was a gold miner at Bendigo. Sketches from this period were exhibited in Melbourne in 1854. He was a noted geologist and naturalist as well as an artist, known to have corresponded with John Gould on the subject of Lyrebirds in 1855. In 1856 he was on the Council of the Victorian Society of Artists. He joined the ill- fated 1860 Burke and Wills expedition and was one of its victims when, some eight months later, he perished about 13 kilometres south of Coopers Creek.
