Gordon Hookey, a member of the Waanyi people, was born in Cloncurry, Queensland in 1961. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and currently lives and works in Brisbane. Although Hookey is primarily recognized as a painter, he also incorporates sculpture, installation, drawing, photography, and animation into his artistic practice. Hookey is a core member of the Indigenous collective proppaNOW, based in Brisbane. His work has been displayed in the Sydney Biennale in the exhibit Paranoia Annoy Ya. One of his exhibitions, called Ruddock's Wheel, poked fun at a statement made by Australian politician Philip Ruddock, who claimed that Aboriginal people had not utilized the wheel. In 2018, Hookey was interviewed for the State Library of Queensland's digital story and oral history collection. Hookey's pieces are featured in most state art gallery collections throughout Australia.
