Born in 1836, in Ireland, Gerald Beere joined the British Army and after postings in North America and Europe was posted to New Zealand in 1864, where he became commander of the Waikato Militia. Later he became an engineer with the Public Works Department and was, engaged upon railway construction. He spent some years in Australia as inspector of Roads and Bridges in the district of Denilquin, NSW but returned to New Zealand. As a self taught watercolourist he painted landscapes in the Waikato region in the 1870s - 1890s.
