Born in Sydney in 1885, William Bowles studied sculpture in Brisbane and, after winning a travelling scholarship, in London where he became assistant to Sir Bertram Mackennal. He served in the Tank Corps during World War I, and after demobilisation and further studies at the Royal Academy, he returned to Australia. In 1926 he was elected member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. In 1925 he became head sculptor at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. In 1931 he moved to Melbourne where he created his best known bronze, 'Diana and the Hounds' in Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens. Bowles died in 1954.
