Samuel Calvert, draughtsman, engraver, printer and painter, was born in Brixton, London. He travelled to Adelaide to join his brothers in 1844. He worked in Adelaide, then in Melbourne from 1850-90 where he was employed by various Melbourne newspapers including 'Age.' He was a prolific exhibitor and designed two Australian stamps.
