Born in England in 1846, George Sherriff studied at West London Art School and the Slade School. In the c1862 he arrived in New Zealand and after finishing school studied in Melbourne and then at the West London School of Art, and the Slade School of Fine Art. On his return to New Zealand he exhibited extensively with Auckland Society of Arts, the Canterbury Society of Arts, the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, the Otago Art Society> His work was shown at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, London in 1886 and the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition in 1888.
