Born in Melbourne in 1869, Meeson was married to well known artist, George Coates. She studied extensively in Australia and Europe and lived in England for some years. Although an accomplished portrait painter, she is best known for her paintings of the River Thames. Meeson exhibited widely in London, Paris and Australia, and in 1919 became the first Australian woman member of the Royal Institute of Painters.

We have records of art auction sales by Dora Meeson from 1972 and in total 216 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 158 (73%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $84,000 for On A Chelsea Balcony sold by Sotheby's in May 2009. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Dora Meeson are held by the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of Western Australia and a further five major public national galleries (see list below).
