Born in England in 1780, George William Evans arrived in Australia in 1802. He was a painter and surveyor - at one stage acting Surveyor General. He led an expedition across the Blue Mountains in 1813 and later accompanied John Oxley as surveyor, several of his sketches being used for illustrations in Oxley's Journals. As a watercolourist, he painted early views of Sydney and Hobart. He was granted 1000 acres of land in Tasmania.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $132,250 for A View of the West Side of Sydney Cove, c. 1804 sold by Sotheby's in November 1993.
