Born in Sydney in 1893, Ray Wenban studied under Julian Ashton and Elioth Gruner. On his return from World War I he became a member of the Victorian Arts Society. He worked for some years in London returning to work as an illustrator for the New South Wales Education Department. A major retrospective of his work was held in Sydney in 1989.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,687 for English Factory Workers Tea Break, c. 1938 sold by Amanda Addams Auctions in October 2004.
