Born in Sydney in 1896, Mary Edwards studied art in Sydney and Paris. She is best known as a portrait painter, but also paints scenes from her frequent trips to the Pacific Islands. With Joseph Wolinski, she was the plaintiff in the Dobell-Joshua Smith Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize court case in 1945. A frequent exhibitor in Archibald competitions. She is also known as Mary Edwell-Burke.

The total number of works by Edwell-Burke Edwards offered for sale by auction since 1969 is 172, of which 111 (65%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $88,358 for Heritage sold by Menzies in March 2012. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Edwell-Burke Edwards are held by the Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Victoria and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
