Born in Victoria in 1939, Gareth Sansom studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1959 to 1964 and had his first solo exhibition in 1959 in Melbourne, followed by almost annual exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Sansom has worked as a teacher and lecturer at Toorak Teachers College and Ballarat Teachers College in Victoria. Sansom was appointed Head of Painting at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1977–1985, and Dean School of Art at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1986–1991. He was artist-in-residence at the University of Melbourne in 1985. He is best known for his large collage paintings which are rarely seen outside Melbourne.
