Charles Woolley was born in Hobart Town in 1834, and worked as a photographer in Hobart from about 1859 to 1870. He mainly took portrait photographs, some overpainted with watercolours. Woolley is best known for his photographic portraits of the five surviving Tasmanian Aborigines taken in August 1866 and exhibited at the Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition later that year, from which several artists created engravings. He again exhibited prints of them at the 1875 Victorian Intercolonial Exhibition.
