Born in Toowoomba, David Hinchcliffe began exhibiting at the age of 12. He won the Courier Mail art competition at age 17 . In the same year he won the Gemini Art Prize in Toowoomba (judged by James Gleeson) and was a finalist in the Blake Art Prize. He studied art at the University of Southern Queensland under William Robinson. In addition a career as a Councillor in Brisbane City (where he served as Deputy Mayor) he has had more than 80 solo exhibitions and is represented by a number of galleries and dealers.
