Born in 1936, John Montefiore studied at East Sydney Technical College, later known as the National Art School, and after winning the NSW Travelling Art Scholarship in 1964, he based himself in London for three years, and visited the great galleries of Europe. On returning to Australia he taught at the National Art School in Newcastle and became an art lecturer at the University of Newcastle. He had seven exhibitions in the first two decasdes after returning to Australia, tut it was his larger artworks that won the most attention. An epic painting was commissioned for the refurbished Newcastle Town Hall and he provided a chapel altarpiece for that city's Christ Church Cathedral.
