Born in England in Selsey Sussex in 183 and was educated at Northgate Chichester Boarding School. In 1844 he was apprenticed to the sea and joined the ship "London" but in 1846 was transferred to the "Statesman" on which he served until 1850. In 1850 he became Second Officer on the 'Simla' and after serving on other vessles became master of the "Kent" in 1856. In 1861 he arrived in New Zealand and joined the New Zealand Insurance Company as Marine Surveyor. He was a keen self-taught artist and is known for his paintings of ships.
