Born in Gelenelg, a suburb of Adelaide in 1926, Rosemary Madigan studied at the East Sydney Technical College and the South Australian School of Art in Adelaide in the 1940s. She won a Travelling Arts Scholarship in 1950, and spent the next three years in Europe, visiting and working in England, France, Italy and Belgium. In the 1950s and 60s she worked as pottery, sculpture and drawing teacher at the Adelaide art school. Rosemary Madigan won the 1986 Wynne Prize, the first sculptor to do so for over 30 years.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $380,455 for Quartet 1981-1991 sold by Smith & Singer in September 2021. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
