Irish born William Dowling was transported to Hobart in 1849. A portrait painter and litographer he worked with his brother Matthew Patrick Dowling in the production of oil and pastel portraits over a photographic image.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1988.
