A New Zealand artist, Jan Nigro was born in Gisborne in 1920. She studied at the Elam School of Art in Auckland from 1936 to 1938 and later in Melbourne under George Bell from 1948. An abstract expressionist painter in oil, pen, pencil and collage, she returned to New Zealand in 1952 and lived at Rotorua. She later lived in Auckland, on the Queensland coast and on Waiheke Island.
