Born in Victoria in 1894, Rowell studied extensively in Melbourne, Europe and America. He taught art in various schools in Victoria and was also vice president of the National Theatre Movement. Rowell's landscapes and outdoor scenes have wide appeal. His work is represented in state and provincial galleries and in the National Collection in Canberra.

John Rowell is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1967 of 510, of which 359 (70%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $18,409 for In Red Gum Country 1940 sold by Leonard Joel in February 2022.
