Born in England in 1819, John Kinder studied art in Bristol before enrolling in law at Cambridge University, graduating as a MA in 1845. He then entered the Church, serving as a curate in London. In 1855 he arrived in New Zealand after accepting a post offered to him as headmaster of the new Church of England Grammar School in Auckland. He left there in 1871 to become master at St John's Theological College. Kinder exhibited paintings with the Society of Artists in 1871 and 1873. He was a keen early photographer and used both photographs and sketches as studies for paintings.
