Born in Gillingham, England in 1870, Tristram arrived in Sydney with his parents and siblings in 1883. After schooling, he worked as an architect with the New South Wales government and as a self taught artist, painted in his spare time. He was a landscape artist, usually in watercolour, and painted around the Northern Sydney beaches areas. He was a member of the Art Society of New South Wales (which became the Royal Art Society of New South Wales), a foundation member of the Australian Watercolour Institute and a foundation member of Australian Art Society with whom he exhibited between 1927 and 1934.
