Tom Peerless was born in Brighton, England in 1858 and emigrated to Australia, arriving in Sydney about 1880. An Australian landscape painter, Peerless frequently painted lake scenes and seascapes, almost always in watercolour. In the 1880s he made two trips to New Zealand where his works are well known. Most of his Australian works are of the New South Wales and Tasmanian areas. In 1895 three of his paintings were selected for inclusion in the Opening Exhibition of the Queensland National Art Gallery in Brisbane. However he died the following year from tuberculosis, aged 38.
